Evaluation - Write up: Byran Ferrol

Now the project has been completed it can be evaluated. We are now able to compare our music video to real media texts. Also we are able to evaluate what we learnt from our audience feedback and technologies which we used for the construction, research and planning of our project.
It can be argued that our music video uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media texts. Ways in which it uses forms and conventions is through the narrative told in the music video. We chose a very stereotypical and generic narrative, which is a couple who had relationship problems and the boy ends up missing the girl. This decision was heavy influenced by the song itself but we still decided to keep to the general conventions of music video narratives. Songs can be interpreted in a number of different ways and that narrative which we chose shows our take on the song. Another way in which we use conventions in forms is through the use of flash backs. Many music videos not just in the rap and RnB genre make use of flash backs to help in the telling of their narrative. Below is a screen shot of how are video is similar to Ne-yo’s Mad in terms of flashbacks.

They also use cut scenes of the song being lip synced which we have included in our music video. Because of the advancement of media technologies the use of green screen has now become a common convention in a number of music videos across many different genre including our chosen genre which is RnB and Rap. Green screen therefore made an appearance in our music video. We used it to show how our music video is innovative and a way in making the video aesthetically pleasing to the audience.
Our video didn’t significantly develop conventions and forms of music videos as I don’t believe we had enough time or the sufficient budget to make these developments. A small development I think we made was the use of text appearing in the screen. Although a number of music videos do, do this music videos of the rap and RnB do not as it is seen more as a comic element. However I believe our music video has developed this aspect in a way of making it serious and create an emotional connection to the audience because of the words that are displayed. Below shows our use of the text in comparison with Bad Meets Evil's Fast Lane which is clearly used for comic effect.

Ways in which our music video challenges other music videos of the same genre is that normally with in the Rap genre the music videos often portray a scene of decadence and materialism. This is mainly conveyed through women showing skin, expensive cars, big houses etc. This is not a scene which is portrayed in our music video instead we show a down to earth music video with a connection to the audience as the narrative is one that can relate to everyday life. Another way in which our music video challenges common conventions and forms of Rap music videos is that most Rap videos show gang culture. Our music video could have easily been put into a gang context but we did not want to convey this kind of message as we thought we might put across the impression that we are trying to glamorise gang culture. Many videos of this sort have been seen as controversial and many people react negatively towards them. Because we do not want this we decided to take a different approach.
Our project included the main video then a number of ancillary texts which was the radio spot, the web page and the album cover. Having these subordinate texts with the main music video creates a bigger overall project and shows how we are able to present our artist to a wider audience. These media texts allow for the majority of people to have access to the artist. Moreover the different media texts all serve a different purpose. The music video gives the viewer entertainment and the artist’s interpretation of their song through visuals. The web page gives information of the artist and also their live Twitter feed so the audience feels more connected to them. It also combines the other media texts together. The radio spot is a way in which the song would be conveyed on the radio. A way of accessing the song if someone does not have a TV or the internet. And lastly the album cover is used for when the song is sold in shops. A way of catching an individual’s eye so they would want to pick up the CD and be intrigued to know what’s on it. All these texts being together make the whole project adaptable to real life as each of these texts are used when an artist is releasing a song. Each text helps, promote, advertise and sell the music video that we have created. Also the synergy of these media texts also gives the whole project more depth as there is not just one way the song can be accessed. Because of this people are able to always find out more as after they have watched the music video they will then be able to go on the website and listen to the radio spot. This is what keeps the audience intrigued with the audience and the song.
After creating our music video we wanted to get the audiences feedback so we showed our video to a number of people. We got a mixture of boys and girls as well as different ethnic backgrounds. The audience feedback will help determine whether our video fulfilled its purpose and was interpreted the way we wanted it to be. Even though many interpretations can be drawn it is still important to know whether the narrative was understandable. The feedback will then tell us what we could have done better and what people really liked. From the audience feedback we learned that people were able to understand our narrative. People saw that it was a couple having problems the boy left and at the end of the video he eventually came back. Not everyone, but a fair few people were able to comprehend the intertextuality of the music video. Our audience touched on a number of positives about the video. Ranging from the words appearing on the screen to the green screen and effects that we used. Other positives were for specific camera shots and angles we used. We asked our audience whether their opinion on Kanye West had changed. Many people said that no, it hadn't changed but having said that they still said that they liked the song so our music video promoted the song more than the actual artist.
When there are positives there are also negatives. Not many people had real criticism toward our video, this may be due to they genuinely thought the video was faultless or they were not willing to reveal their true feelings about the video to us. However people were also still able to pick up on a few negatives. Most of these negatives were for, similarly, particular camera shots and angles we used. People said that some shots were a bit shaky or did not look professional enough. Others said that we did not include a big enough variety of camera shots and angles. These criticisms will help greatly in producing future projects. Overall people said that they liked the video, were able to understand the narrative and said that they would buy the album meaning that we had achieved our goal.
Different media technologies came in very handy throughout the entire project. From the planning right through to the evaluation. The planning stages mainly required the use of Celtx. A programme that is used to plan the production of a film. We used this programme to create our calendar, master catalogue and storyboard. Before the project started we used the calendar to set out the days that we planned to film on and edit on. This will make sure that we are organised and we know exactly when and where we are filming. The master catalogue was used to keep details of props, locations, actors etc. This ensured we knew what locations we were using and when we were using them. The same was done for the actors and the props. The storyboard was used so the group knew what shots were going to be used for each part of the music video. The storyboard was first drawn on paper then scanned in and imported on to Celtx.

For the research music metric was used to gain access to data affiliated with our artist. Music metric provided us information about the artist’s music sales and demographic data that would help when creating our music video. Apart from this the only other technology we used was the internet that provided us with information music metric didn’t. This was mainly more general demographic data such as the music sales for a particular genre.
The construction section of the project used the most media technologies, Firstly Adobe Premiere was used to edit the music video. The clips that we filmed were put into a sequence on the programme and the selected clips were then altered and manipulated to achieve the desired outcomes. Adobe After Effects was used for the green screen. The green screen footage was imported into Adobe After Effects and the green was colour keyed out allowing for a different video or image to be placed in the background. Photoshop was used for the creation of the digipak. The front cover, the inside and the back cover, Photoshop was uses as it allows for images and photos to be manipulated and put together to create a completely new piece of art. This programme helped greatly in making our album cover as it allowed for us to achieve a professional look. We also used Photoshop to manipulate images that were then going to be placed on our website. Another media text constructed was the website. For this we used iWeb. Creating the website proved to be a very easy task as templates were pre installed and free to use. Also no coding was involved just a simple drag and drop process. Garageband was used for the construction of the radio spot. Recordings were able to be strung together in conjunction with electronic instruments preinstalled in the programme.

Media technologies used for the evaluation section mainly involved technologies on the internet such as Youtube, Blogger, Survey Monkey and slideshare. Youtube was used to post all our podcasts and the actual music video, Blogger to post uor write ups, survey monkeys to gather audience feedback and also used for the research and lastly slideshare was used so presentations created could be  viewed on Blogger. Photobooth was used to film podcasts and reaction videos. These videos were then posted on Youtube. Photobooth was very convenient as no uploading was required because Photobooth makes use of the webacam so videos were automatically saved on the PC.
Our project would have been much more difficult without all these media technologies as they provide us with much help and shortcuts into completing tasks. I believe the overall project was a success however there were many aspects that could have been improved and if we were to do the whole project again we would work much harder to meet our deadlines.

Evaluation - Write up: Michael Ikeji

After months of research, planning and construction i am going to evaluate our project by addressing certain questions relating to media as a whole.

Our media product does challenge forms of real media products of the same genre as normally the rap genre music videos a narrative is not normally displayed. Within an rap music video we normally see ritual celebration and the objectification of women but we have not included that in our music videos therefore we are challenging real media texts. As shown in the example below common rap videos show the artist showing off with jewellery and females trying to show that they are superior to everyone else as women are often subjected in these videos. If you compare that to our video you can see how we took a different route to the common video showing emotion that isn't normally shown in the rap genre.

Our video takes a more softer tone and to a certain extent a depressing feeling as it corresponds with the song. Also I believe our video challenges other music videos as it is of a longer length. Rap videos are generally about 3 minutes long due to their non-narrative content but ours is around 6 minutes long meaning it is of a significant increased length compared to other rap music videos. Moreover we had a significantly lower budget than normal rap music videos meaning we had to make do with the supplies we had. Because of the lower budget sets and props were not as elaborate as normal music video and we were not able to achieve effects that required specialist software. However overall I think our music video is similar to a lot of rap music videos already produced as we mostly tried to keep with the aspects of generic music videos.

During the project we created a number of texts that would coincide with the music video in order to make one piece of media text. During this process we had to make a number of texts including the album cover, the webpage and the radio spot. Having all these aspects together gives the whole media text more depth as if we just had the music video there will be nothing else to learn about the artist which is where the webpage comes in giving people more information about the artist. The album cover gives a visual representation of the song so you can already how all the texts go together making the overall text more real. We are not the only people that do this as other artists do this with their music videos. An example I am going to show concerns the cd cover. A Cd cover is a way to help promote an artist’s album release by intriguing the audience with album covers. Sometimes this is the reason why people buy albums. Our cover is similar to real life media because as you can see, covers from our era use more graphics than portraits due to the improvements in technology and improved skills, also musicians now invest more in albums covers designs.
Our album cover was inspired by Kanye West’s album called 808’s and heartbreak because the content of both are based on the concept of heartbreak which is why we decided to adopt a similar centre image of a broken heart. Another way in which our cover is similar to other media texts is by the use of the parental advisory logo. A parental advisory symbol printed on albums shows a level of maturity to the album and that parents should determine whether or not the material is suitable for their children to hear. So you can see how real artists use ancillary texts as well.

Our audience consisted of a mixture of male and female participants in order to allow us to obtain a balance of responses to give us a better overview about the project. What we learnt from the audience feedback is that they appreciate that we took a different step from the average rap video as we tried to put a lot of emotion into the song and the video. We also learnt that the narrative we were trying to portray was indeed interpreted correctly by the audience as they were able to outline that the couple in the video were having problems with the relationship leaving him with heartbreak etc. until he comes back at the end. All in all I think from the audience feedback we are able to say that we achieved our goal in creating the music video as we wanted the audience to understand the narrative of the video.
For creating the project we used a variety of media technologies through every stage of production that ranged from iWeb all the way to Photoshop. The research aspect of the project didn’t require us to use any media technologies as it was simple reading from the internet however it wasn’t until planning when we starting using various technologies. For planning we mainly used Celtx to do the storyboard, master catalogue and calendar in order to prepare us for the project as locations, props and filming days would be decided beforehand. The construction stage is where we used the most technologies. In order to edit the video we used Adobe Premiere to take the clips and cut them down to our taste mixing them with different transitions making the video more interesting. Once the film was finished there was the need to export the video to the correct format which is where we used Adobe Media Encoder which allowed us to convert the file to an f4v file to enable it to be put onto YouTube. IWeb was used in order to create the website for our artist that was also accompanied by the radio spot that was created using Garage Band. Adobe After Effects was also used to create visual effects that we wouldn’t normally be able to do in real life which was actually implemented into the video. Creating the cd cover was made using the program Adobe Photoshop. Further use of Adobe Premiere during our evaluation stages enabled us to edit our podcast reducing risk of error. One of the most important media technologies however that was used was Blogger. His was used to allow us to keep up to date with ourselves and also the audience as they would be able to read certain events on filming days and also tips and tricks on programs.

Evaluation: Reaction to Blame game Review

Overall, the criticism we recieved from the review was really positive. It was nice to know that our narrative went together as expected and made sense to the viewers. She thought that the acting was really good and went well with the song's lyrics, also there was a clear distinction between who was singing and rapping, which meant the viewers would be able to identify which character is which.
She believed that effort was shown when we arranged for our setting to be both in a house and in a nice location which gives us an advantage in improving the proffessionalism of the video.

Although she gave a positive review of the music video stating that there wouldnt be anything to change if we were to do it again, she did state that we could re-do our argument scene in the bridge of the song in order to make the acting in it look more natural.

Evaluation - Initial Idea to Final Product

We have changed a few aspects of our music video from the initial proposal to the final outcome. These changes may be due to the group changing their mind or something that we wanted in our music video being unachievable.
The first change is that we first decided to have the whole video in black & white. However this quickly changed as in our music video we have included flash backs and it would be hard to differentiate between the present and the flash back leading us to abolish the idea. We could have achieved this by not having flashbacks but these were vital in the narrative of the music video so it was important that we kept them in.

Our green screen idea also changed from our initial proposal. Our initial idea was that we were going to play a clip that we had created ourselves, stop it, then have the actor singing in front. As the production of the music video went on we did not feel that it would be necessary or appropriate to include this in our music video so we changed the idea. Many ideas within the group were put forward, this was a positive thing as it allowed the group to decide on the best idea and really showed the groups enthusiasm towards the video. Our chosen green screen was that we downloaded a video of a clock. We then sped this clock up and placed michal on the face. This was done to show time passing so the audinces knows that the end of the video takes place several days after the main content of the music video.

Another important aspect of the music video that changed from the initial proposal to the final product is the amount of the song that we cut. We were definitely going to cut the last 2 minutes of the song but as the project advanced we also decided to cut a section of the song within the model. This was sue to the lip syncing of that particular bit being too hard to film which lead to us scrapping it. Instead we now have the instrumental of the song playing and will we include some visuals to go with it.
Location was a big change in our music video. At first we were unsure of where we were going to the film the majority of the music video but we finally decided on an estate near barking. Aswell as this we also had to decide on where we were going to film the flashbacks. Acquiring a suitable house proved difficult and after much searching we finally found one. However this location then proved to be unavailable to us leading us to find somewhere else to film the flashbacks of the music video. We eventually found somewhere but it was completely different than the original location causing us to make some changes to the narrative of the music video.

An imperative change came towards the end of the project. We noticed that our chosen song had a number of profane words. Because we want our video to be of an industry standard and not alienate the younger audience we thought it would be best to sensor these words out. We searched for all the swears and rude language and reversed it so the words could not be identified when listened to. We got this inspiration from videos on MTV as they normally sensor their words often by reversing it. Now our video will be suitable for a wider range of people to listen to not just adults.

On completion of the music video we noticed that our last scene eded a bit too suddenly so we thought of a way to supplement this. We eventually came to the idea of having a quote from Kanye West himself as many videos at industry standard do today. We searched for suitable quotes by Kanye West on the internet and eventually found one that would fit perfectly with our song. Below is a screen shot of how it appeared on our music video.

Aswell as changes we also added additional ideas to our music video. This included different camera shots and the inclusion of more motifs. A significant motif which we decided to add was intertextuality. This was because we felt that not many artists include this in their music video so to stand out we decided to add this. Many ideas of how we could include this were put forward, including the artist watching himself in the cinema and the girl watching the artist on the TV. We eventually decided to go through with the idea of the girl watching the artist on the television as we believed this connected more with the narrative we were trying to tell. Furthermore we also drastically changed the ending of the music video. We instead left a bit of ambiguity at the end of the music video to get the audience thinking. However this ambiguity was then broken due to the very last scene of the male character coming back. Even though these changes and additions were made the overall concept of the music video has stayed the same and these changes have only enhanced our music video we believe.

Evaluation - Final Product Survey

Below is a screen shot of the survey we are gonna use to get feedabck on our finished project. This survey will help in our evaluation as to whether our music video achieved what we intended or what could have been done better in the music video. The questions chosen are ones that will give us a general view as to what people think of our music video. We've included questions asking what they liked, and what they didn't like so we can get an idea of exactly what we did right and what we could have done better. Also we added a question asking who the viewer thinks the perfect target audience for the video is. We intended the video for a specific target audience so if the repsonse we get is the same as what the group had in mind then the music video was a success. Near the beginning of the project we decided that the narative would be a very importanat aspect of the music video, this lead us to ask whether the viewer understood the narrative. If the viewer did not then the music video has no purpose as the sole puprose is to convey a message through the narrative. It is importnant fr us to know whether the view understood the music video so then we can look back and see why they might not have undersood it. A question on location was also added. The location of the music video plays a big part in the interpretation and the way the song is conveyed. If the location does not correctly correspond with the music genre then we have made a fatal error and is something that we will need to pick up on in our evaluation. The last question just asks the view to rate the music on a scale of 1-10 so we get a general overview of whether they loked our music video or not. Asking questions is all well and good when evaluating but music videos are to be enjoyed so we must ask our viewers how good they thought it was.

Results & Analysis
A number of people completed the survey as we had shared it through facebook and also placed it in the description of the YouTube video. The answers we got were very varied but we still believe that we achieved what we wanted right from the beginning.

Question 1 asked about the chosen song choice. The options given were Very Bad, Bad, Average, Good and Very Good

Evaluation - How does our project challenge real media texts?

Our music video does challenge most music videos of the same genre as normally with in RnB music videos a narrative is not normally displayed. Because of the lower budget sets and props were not as elaborate as normal music video and we were not able to achieve effects that required specialist software. Construction - Day 9 of Editing

The 9th day of editing proved to be the last. The last clips that were filmed were of the couple in their home and their relationship problems. Most of he clips were made black & white to emphasise the fact that its a flash backs. A section of the song that was cut was filled with a montage of the couple arguing. The additive dissolve effect was used to create fragmentation within the scene emphasising the chaotic undertone.
This editing day also saw us add in intertextuality. We filmed the female lead watching a television. We were then gonna overlay a clip of the male lead singing and place it on top of the screen so it looks like the female is actually watching him on the screen. However while we filmed this the camera moved slightly which means the whole illusion would be compromised. To overcome this we instead used a still image so there was no chance of the camera moving. We then placed the desired clips on the screen to achieve the effect. It took a bit of time to overlay the clips to make sure it loked like it was actually appearing on the screen. The finished outcome was very clean and professional and it was hard to tell that it was a still image with the clip placed on top of it.
After this the music video was then finished and ready to be exported. We exported it as an flv so it was in a suitable format to be placed on Youtube.

-BYRAN FERROL-

Construction - Day 8 of Editing

The 8th day of editing started with the new green screen idea being produced. Our new idea was to place Michael on the face of a clock and speed up the clock to show time passing. This was successfully achieved on after effects. A video of a clock face was downloaded then sped up usind Adobe Premiere. It was then imported into After Effects. The footage of Michael was also imported. However the green had to be color keyed out. This was a lengthy process as there were shadows on the green screen meaning there were different tones of green on the green screen. The different shades of green then had to be selected individually until all the green had gone. Once this was done Michael was then placed on the clock and the effect of the clock actually being in the backgorund was created.
Problems arose when the clip was ready to be exported. Many of the files we exported the clip as made the clip appear blurry when imported onto Adobe Premiere. We repeated the exporting process 4 times until we eventually found a high quality format that was suitable to use for our music video.
When the green screen was imported into Adobe Premiere we then made it black and white, an effect that we had used previously in our music video. We placed the clip right before the very end scene to indicated that time had passed before the end scene took place.
As well as this another part of the music video was changed due to the groups weariness towards it. After much analysis we did not like the "supposed" death scene where the clip stopped on Michael's face. We then changed this to mysself appearing afterward where Michael had previously been. A cross dissolve was used so my body dissolved into the scene then dissolved out. The finished effect was favourable among the group.
After this day of editing there was not much left to edit of the film. The only bits that were missing were scenes of the couple.

-BYRAN FERROL-

Construction - Day 7 of Editing

The 7th day of editing was mainly dedicated to green screen. This meant that instead of using Adobe Premiere we had to use Adobe After Effects as the is the programme used to achieve the green screen effect. We had filmed a number of different green screen shots so we were able to make a decision at a later date of which one were going to use in our music video. The idea which I edited this day was an idea put forward of the artist being placed on a money note. No major difficulties occurred the only difficulty being setting the colour. It was hard to get the right balance as changing the tolerance lead to the footage becoming blacked out. However after this it was very easy to get an image of the money bill then placing Michael on it. However after this day of editing we are not sure whether this will be used so our next days of filming will involve filming other ideas that can be used for the green screen.
-BYRAN FERROL-

Construction - Day 6 of Editing

Day 6 of editing pretty much involved the same process as previous days of editing. We had filmed new clips in the same location as the previous days of filming. Our video was nearly complete meaning that the clips filmed were clips that needed re-filming or “filler” clips. The editing day also proved to be long and strenuous as still a high level of editing knowledge was needed to achieve our intended effects. The most difficult clips to edit were clips that saw Michael jumping off a bridge. Because Michael couldn’t actually jump off a bridge editing was needed to give off this effect. The way in which we filmed this was a shot from the side and from the front of Michael jumping over the safety bar and a POV shot of the camera falling towards the water. This had to be carefully edited so the desired effect could be portrayed to the audience. After many attempts of trying to create the affect all these attempts proved futile as the footage wasn’t good enough. In the end what we decided to do was was to partially scrap the POV shot as it did not look “real” enough then just use the side shot and front shot. We then stopped the front shot on a particular part where Michael’s face could be seen. We then cross dissolved footage of the water over this stopped clip and added a splashing noise indicating to the audience that he had jumped into the water. I believe that this was a success as I feel that the audience will still get the idea that the artist jumped without physically seeing it.

Another part of editing which was perhaps more difficult than this was trying to lip sync and create a split screen for a particular part of the song. The effect we wanted was to have “two” Michaels on screen having a conversation with each other while lip syncing a certain part of the song. The filming day before saw  Michael finding it very hard to lip sync this part of the song so when editing came a long there were many of the same type of clip which proved to be a lengthy task finding the correct one. After the correct clips were found we then had to lips sync each clip to the corresponding part of the song. This was successful even though Michael had trouble lip syncing we were still able to fit together certain parts of the clip and the music. After this was done the split screen effect then had to be created.  This was unsuccessful as it could easily be seen that the two clips were separate where as the split screen effect means it looking like it was all filmed at once. Because of this we decided we could not use it in the video leading us to completely scarp the idea of the split screen effect. We then tried to come up with other ideas of how we could film it but no ideas came to fruition meaning we cut that section if the song out of the music video. Instead of just completely cutting it out we downloaded the instrumental of the song and matched it up to the correct place in the music video then had that playing instead. This helped in cutting down the length of our music video.
-BYRAN FERROL-

Contruction - Day 9 of Filming

The 9th day of filming was what we proclaimed the final day of filming as our objectives was to film the remaining blanks that are in the video. The filming on this day consisted of scenes involving the couple in the video where the footage obtained will be used as narrative in the video. We played with different story lines and camera shots and angles which included filming a blank screen which in premiere will be used to add another scene into it in order to replicate intertextuality.

The final day of filming occurred with no problems as i feel that we were very determined to make that day final and we were pushed for time as myself and my co-star could not attend filming for any longer than 3 hours due to other activities. We knew that we had to rap things up within 3 hours which made us i dare say the most focused we've ever been.

After 9 days of filming equilvalating to about 2-3 months of production, Elite Records are proud to declare that all footage for our project has been filmed with no other needs for filming days. Throughout the whole experience there are definitely a number of things that we could do better if we were to go through the process again, this includes time management, organisation and communication between groups members to allow an easier experience.

Construction: Changing Image from Google

In order to change the image i used, i first looked for an image in google. of a broken heart and inserted it into the program photshop.

The image was then edited by altering the brightness and contrast using the adjustment layer. The Contrast/Brightness tool can be found under Layer/ New Adjustment Layer/ Contrast/Brightness

Or on the layers palette (accessable in Window/ Layers) click on the half white & Black circle and choose "Contrast/Brightness"

What comes up is perhaps simple pop-up window in photoshop. The concept is very straight-forward, the top slider adjusts brightness, and the bottom one adjusts contrast. Once i played around with the contrasts, i was happy with the shade of blue i had obtained as well as the fact i was able to eradicate the shade of grey behind.

Once happy with the hear i used the lasso tool to select the whole shape of the heart and exporting the outline so that it could be imported into the acuall CD cover.

The heart was finished and imported on the actual cover to eventually look like this.
